Chicago Transit Authority
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates the city’s public transportation system, comprising buses and trains. The CTA provides reliable and affordable services, connecting various neighborhoods and suburbs. Here are the key modes of transportation within the CTA:
Fare System
The CTA employs a reloadable fare card called the Ventra Card, which can be purchased and recharged at various stations and retailers, similar to London’s Oystercard. You can also use contactless payment methods like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. Ventra may also be used to pay for trips on Pace buses and Metra trains.
‘L’ Trains
The elevated train system, commonly known as the “L,” serves Chicago and nearby suburbs. It consists of color-coded lines (Red, Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, and Yellow) that cover the city extensively. ‘L’ trains generally run from 4:00 am to 1:00 am on weekdays, with slightly different schedules on weekends and holidays. During peak commuting hours (roughly 6:30 am to 9:30 am and 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm), trains can be crowded. Plan accordingly and allow extra time for your commute.
Buses
The CTA operates a vast network of buses that complement the ‘L’ trains, providing service throughout the city. Buses run 24/7, but frequency may vary depending on the time of day and specific routes. Buses around the SeatGeek Stadium are operated by Pace Surburban Bus, who accept CTA passes for travel.
